The transition from the Chalcolithic to the Bronze Age in the Iberian Peninsula, around 2200 BCE, is one of the most consequential demographic events in European prehistory. Published work has established that this period saw the arrival of steppe-related ancestry and a near-complete turnover of paternal (Y-chromosome) lineages across much of Iberia. Yet several major datasets that could sharpen this picture remain unpublished, appearing only as conference abstracts and lectures. This post gathers what is publicly known about three of them.
Roc de les Orenetes: Patrilineality Before the Steppe
The most detailed of these is Roc de les Orenetes, a burial cave in the high Eastern Pyrenees near Queralbs (Ripollès, Girona), at roughly 1,840 meters above sea level. The site was used as a collective inhumation in at least two phases across the third and second millennia BCE. The ISBA11 abstract reports genome-wide data for 65 exceptionally well-preserved individuals belonging to the Late Chalcolithic phase, dated to 2500–2300 BCE. isba11+1
The authors reconstructed a pedigree of 38 closely related individuals, organized around five sub-families likely descending from five founding lineages. Crucially, this community lacked steppe-associated ancestry, even though it dates to a moment close to the earliest appearance of that ancestry in Iberia. The social organization described is patrilineal, with female exogamy: women appear to have moved between communities while paternal lines remained resident. This pattern is independently supported by stable-isotope work from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, which points to non-local origins for the women.isba11

The significance is direct and striking. Patrilineality and female exogamy, the very social model later imposed across the Mediterranean coast of Iberia by R1b-M269-related groups during the Bronze Age, were already present in local Iberian populations of the Final Chalcolithic, before the large-scale demographic change. This suggests that the incoming steppe-related paternal lineages did not introduce a novel kinship template so much as they replaced the carriers of a pre-existing one.pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih+1
The site has also produced exceptional evidence of interpersonal violence: a flint arrowhead embedded in a human rib, with signs of bone regeneration showing the individual survived for some time after the impact.
Euskal Herria and the Collective Burial Dolmens
A second dataset, presented by Iñigo Olalde in a video lecture available on YouTube, concerns the Chalcolithic of the Basque Country and the collective burial dolmens of the Rioja Alavesa: Alto de la Huesera, Chabola de la Hechicera, and El Sotillo. The striking result reported is the absence of close endogamy within these monuments. Rather than tight family mausoleums, the dolmens appear to have gathered individuals connected mainly through small IBD segments reflecting population-level clustering, not recent relatedness.
The paternal picture is dominated by haplogroup I2a, with a shared ancestral clade linking many of the males. This contrasts with the matrilineal clustering seen later in Iron Age Britain, and instead points to a community-based burial system with a patrilineal component and long-distance kinship ties, possibly linked to seasonal mobility and transhumance between the mountains and the Ebro valley.
